1941. Napoleone V regna sulla Francia quando gli scienziati iniziano a scomparire misteriosamente. Privato della tecnologia moderna, il mondo è governato dall'energia a carbone e dal vapore. Avril, una ragazza, parte alla ricerca dei suoi genitori, scienziati scomparsi, in compagnia di Darwin, il suo gatto parlante, e di Julius, un giovane furfante. Il trio dovrà affrontare pericoli e misteri per scoprire quale mistero e quale motivo si celino dietro le sparizioni.

1941. Le monde est radicalement différent de celui décrit par l’Histoire habituelle. Napoléon V règne sur la France, où, comme partout sur le globe, depuis 70 ans, les savants disparaissent mystérieusement, privant l’humanité d’inventions capitales. Ignorant notamment radio, télévision, électricité, aviation, moteur à explosion, cet univers est enlisé dans une technologie dépassée, comme endormi dans un savoir du XIXème siècle, gouverné par le charbon et la vapeur.
C’est dans ce monde étrange qu’une jeune fille, Avril, part à la recherche de ses parents, scientifiques disparus, en compagnie de Darwin, son chat parlant, et de Julius, jeune gredin des rues. Ce trio devra affronter les dangers et les mystères de ce Monde Truqué. Qui enlève les savants depuis des décennies ? Dans quel sinistre but ?

L'aquilotto più forte è destinato a scacciare dal nido il fratello più debole: questo è solitamente ciò che accade quando due piccoli di aquila si trovano a condividere lo stesso nido. Spesso accade anche tra gli uomini che, a ferirli, siano proprio le persone più vicine. Lukas, infatti, soffre a causa della freddezza che il padre mostra nei suoi confronti successivamente alla dolorosa perdita della moglie, morta nel tentativo di salvare il piccolo Lukas da un incendio. Il bambino porta sulle sue giovani spalle il peso della morte della madre.

Attraverso le testimonianze dei protagonisti interpretati da attori che utilizzano le dichiarazioni rilasciate in interviste e libri a loro dedicati, documenti d'epoca e spezzoni di numerosi film si ripercorrono trent'anni di storia della malavita italiana.
Ezio Barbieri, Paolo Casaroli, Pietro Cavallero, Luciano De Maria, Horst Fantazzini, Luciano Lutring. Sono nomi e cognomi di 'banditi' (come titolava un importante film di Lizzani dedicato alla banda Cavallero) che hanno lasciato un segno nella società italiana che usciva dalla seconda guerra mondiale, affrontava gli anni del cosiddetti boom precipitando poi negli anni di piombo. La scelta di Renato De Maria è quella di farli parlare grazie ad attori forse poco noti ma assolutamente efficaci, i quali non 'inventano' il personaggio ma gli danno voce collocati in uno spazio neutro. Le parole sono quelle raccolte da grandi firme del giornalismo come Montanelli, Bocca, Biagi.
